MARINE ON ST. CROIX PART ONE
Marine on St. Croix, MN, originally founded in 1839 as Marine Mills, was the site of the first commercial saw mill on the St. Croix River.
Illinois lumbermen, David Hone and Lewis Jud, impressed by the abundant white pine trees in the area, saw this as the perfect location for the mill, which they named after their hometown of Marine, IL. This first sawmill in Minnesota, began production in August 1839, and continued operation through 1895.
