EARLY SPRING?
When it comes to augury, no prediction is as anxiously
awaited as that of Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day. If Phil fails to see his shadow then an early
spring is just around the corner, however if the rotund rodent does see his
shadow, then another six weeks of winter lie ahead. This year Phil, who has faithfully been
predicting the length of winter since 1887, saw his shadow in Punxsutawney,
PA, indicating six more weeks of winter.
Sitting here in Minneapolis I’m smiling at that prediction. Had Phil been here at 7:30 this morning, he
wouldn’t have seen his shadow, thus declaring an early spring. However, even if he had seen his shadow, we
Minnesotans would still have been quite happy.
After all, six more weeks of winter in Minnesota IS an early spring.
